I’ve been trying to write this post for over three weeks now and all I could come up with is: “I love you, Katy Cook!” and “We had the most amazing wedding photographer ever!”
Talking to my guests hasn’t helped either. All I hear from them is “Your wedding photographer was awesome!” “She was everywhere!” “She rocked!” “I can’t believe how long she stayed!” “We loved her!” and “Holy ish, your photos!”
All of that is true, and then some.
How I Found Katy Cook Photography:
We were three months away from the big day and I realized the photographer we were going to bring with us was trying to fade out of the photography business. I was crushed. Kim did our engagement photos and we were super comfortable with her.
So with three months to go I started reaching out to Asheville wedding photographers in a bit of a panic. Thankfully Homewood’s website has a list of suggested vendors and Katy is included, so I emailed her.
But before I heard back from her, I started stalking her blog. I knew as soon as I saw her photos that this woman was gifted and that I wanted her to do our wedding. Within 30 minutes of being in her company on our rainy wedding day, I knew we’d made the right choice.
Why Katy Cook is THE Most Amazing Destination Wedding Photographer Ever:
Katy Made Long Distance Wedding Planning Easy:
After our second email Katy friend requested me on Facebook. By our fourth email we were exchanging one sentence thoughts. After our 10th email we were emailing late at night and early in the morning.
This lady was available whenever I needed her and answered my questions thoroughly and quickly – including just before a flight to Grand Turk via iPad.
Katy Came Prepared:
This is a lady who knows what’s up. When I emailed her about the impending rain, she was quick to reassure me that a) it would all be okay and b) there are a dozen reasons why overcast weather is perfect for photos.
But when it came to our actual wedding day and it had been raining for 24 straight hours, she showed up prepared with two white parasols, an assistant to hold an umbrella over her camera while she shot, and a ‘let’s DO this’ attitude. Not once did the rain get in her way of getting me the shots I wanted or the moments we wanted captured.
Katy is an Artist:
Katy’s camera and her lenses are her brushes. The lighting, her subjects, their emotions, and the scenery are her palette.
She is able to take everything going on around her in and within seconds frame up the perfect sequence of shots to ensure the moment is captured. Her sense of composition is unparalleled and her post production work is absolutely amazing.
It’s almost as if she had a vision of our entire wedding before she even took the first photo; a vision that developed from listening to me, reading over my shot list, getting to know us personally as the night wore on, and reading the vibe of our crowd.
We don’t just have wedding photos, we have wedding art.
Katy is Cool and Works Her Butt Off:
When booking Katy for our wedding I had no qualms or questions concerning her skills – her work speaks for itself. But what I found out at our wedding – literally within five minutes of meeting her – is that she is freaking COOL.
My friends are a rowdy bunch. Our tastes are *not* conservative. The music we played at our wedding could be considered downright foul (We played Get Low at our wedding. ‘Nuff said).
But the quirks of my friends and family didn’t even make Katy blink twice. She followed us around the dance floor, put up with our drunk friends (and selves), stood on chairs, and understood when I ditched a group photo to hit the dance floor in time to shout “CITY OF COMPTON!”
And she did it for EIGHT. HOURS.
Katy is Amazing.
Vince and I would say Katy is worth her weight in gold, but she’s so tiny that it’s just not the right analogy.
All we can say is that she is amazing, and without doubt the best destination wedding photographer we have had the pleasure of working with. We’ve been to a few destination weddings in our day, and while we might be a little biased, we believe our photos are the best.
